Overground endoscopy
Bourtonvale Equine Clinic has access to an Overground Scope through EV Veterinary Products Ltd. It is not uncommon for horses that make an abnormal respiratory noise at exercise to have a normal endoscopic appearance of their upper respiratory tract when examined at rest. The overground scope allows horses throats to be examined when under exercise in normal conditions so helping to provide a diagnosis and appropriate treatment. The image above shows the scope in position, the horse being ready for exercise when a recording will be obtained. As you can see the system is not used solely for racehorses. The video clip shows a horse that starts exercise with a relatively normal looking larynx but as the animal starts to tire the left side of the larynx can be seen to be collapsing in to the midline.
Warning: Videos contains graphic images of surgical procedures, which some people may find disturbing.
