Charlie McCartan MVB MRCVS
Charlie qualified from University College Dublin in 1975. He joined the practice (then called ‘Brain and Cullen’) in 1976 and became a partner in 1980. He has worked at the top level with all equestrian disciplines. He went to the Los Angeles Olympics as team vet to the Australian Showjumping team and he has covered numerous International Endurance events both at home and in Jordan. Many of the top dressage and event horses in the country are under his care. He has always had a great interest in horse racing, looking after many top yards. These days he specialises more in the reproduction side of the practice and is our most experienced thoroughbred stud vet with great expertise in this field.
Mark Lucey BVM&S MRCVS
Mark qualified from Edinburgh University in 1976. He joined the practice in 1978, becoming a partner in 1984. His main interests are in competition horse work, specifically one and three day Eventing. He also carries out a high percentage of our pre-purchase examinations. He was team vet for the Portuguese three day event team at the Barcelona Olympics and then for the Spanish event team until 1998. Mark went to the Sydney Olympics with the Greek individual competitor Heidi Antikasides. Since 2001 he has been team vet for the British Young Rider Three Day Event team. This team is one of the most successful equestrian teams in the UK with seven team gold and two team silver medals in the last nine years. Mark is on duty at many of the top 3 day events in the UK, including Badminton, Blenheim, Bramham, Houghton Hall and Weston Park.
Jeremy Swan BVSc MRCVS
Jeremy qualified from Liverpool University in 1983. He worked in mixed practices in Pembrokeshire and Upton-on-Severn before joining the clinic. He became a partner in 1988. Multi-talented, he has been actively involved with all aspects of the practice. He has done a huge amount of stud and AI work in his time. He has been the clinic’s main orthopaedic surgeon and dual colic surgeon. He set up the clinic’s scintigraphy unit to help with lameness investigations. These days he predominantly covers the growing racehorse base to our practice.
Richard Tyler BVSc CertEP CertES(ST) MRCVS
Richard qualified from Liverpool University with a BVSc in 1984. He worked in practices in Nottingham and Lichfield before moving to Bourton Vale in 1989. Richard became a partner in 1993. He is the practice's main surgeon. He enjoys all surgery but particular areas of interest are the head, neck and abdomen. Richard holds Royal College Certificates in Equine Practice and Equine Surgery. Richard has been an examiner for the RCVS Certificate in Equine Practice, and a member of the RCVS Equine Medicine & Surgery Board. He has presented papers, mainly concerning surgery, at BEVA meetings. Apart from family, interests outside work largely involve wildlife and in particular ornithology which provides good reason for travelling to remote parts of the world.
Greg Staniek BVMS MRCVS
Greg was born and brought up in Poland, where he was a member of the Polish Young Riders Showjumping team. Greg came to the United Kingdom in 1988 and graduated from Glasgow in 1992. Initially he worked in a mixed practice near Milton Keynes before moving to an equine clinic at Newark, near Nottingham. In 1995 Greg arrived at Bourton Vale and joined the partnership in 1999. Greg now carries out much of the stud work including some thoroughbred studs and a good deal of sport horse AI work. He has particular interest in embryo transfer, which is an ever growing area of our practice.
Tom Campbell BVSc MRCVS
Tom qualified in 1998 at Massey University, New Zealand. He has worked exclusively in equine practices, including three and a half years in a large equine practice in Sydney, Australia. He joined Bourton Vale in April 2002, becoming a partner in 2008. He is actively involved in all aspects of the practice, running our scintigraphy (bone scanning) unit and can turn his hand to surgery when required. He particularly specialises in lameness investigations, predominantly racehorse, polo and sport horses. A keen racing enthusiast he is often on duty for vet work at Newbury racecourse and is in demand for pre purchase thoroughbred sales vettings. He also enjoys being on duty at top level Eventing competitions.
Natasha Seely BVM&S MRCVS
Natasha joined us in October 2003 after qualifying from Edinburgh University. She has previously competed very successfully at showing and Eventing and is now riding winners point to pointing. She is involved in all areas of the practice, including a large part of the anaesthesia and hospital cases admitted to the clinic. Natasha is specialising in dentistry which is an ever growing component of our practice.
Adele Lewis BVetMed MRCVS
Adele joined us in March 2007 after qualifying from Royal Veterinary College in 2005. She has worked in two previous equine practices in Kent and Derbyshire before joining Bourton Vale. She is on our anaesthesia and hospital rotation team and has developed many skills in all aspects of equine practice. Adele is a keen polo player in her spare time.
Holly Curgenven BVSc MRCVS
Holly graduated from Liverpool University in 2002. She worked in mixed practice for one year before specialising in equine work in North Wales and Derbyshire before joining us in September 2007. Holly completed her General Practice certificate in Equine Medicine in 2005. She has a keen interest in anaesthesia, surgery and stud work.
Emma Roberts BVSc MRCVS
Emma joined Bourton Vale in November 2008 primarily to help with stud work, but is also highly skilled in all areas of equine veterinary medicine. She qualified at Liverpool in 2003 before gaining a good grounding at a clinic in Cheshire. She then based herself in Australia working at two practices. In the first practice she specialised in equine reproduction, carrying out thoroughbred stud work, artificial insemination, embryo transfer and foal medicine. At the second practice she specialised in racehorse and sport horse lameness investigations.
